This car was built as a works car by Alan Mann Racing for use by the team and Alan Mann to contest historic races in Europe. Using some learning from a previous works Mustang build and many years of experience, the car was built to incorporate the latest developments and was tested extensively.
Sir John Whitmore and Alan Mann contributed to the testing programme and the car was subsequently raced with much success by Alan Mann Racing for several seasons. This effort culminated in the last race that Sir John Whitmore and Alan Mann did together at the Goodwood Revival in 2005.
Forty years after their success in winning the European Touring Car Championship with a clean sweep in 1965, it was a special moment to have two legends of touring car racing sharing a red and gold car once again. As it happened, that was the last race Alan Mann himself would drive in, before handing over driving duties to his son, Henry, whose first race win was in this car. Numerous race wins were achieved by the team with this car, and it was driven by Sir John Whitmore again at Goodwood in 2007.

History
The brainchild of senior Ford executive Lee Iaccoca, the Ford Mustang quickly became the fastest selling car of all time on its release in 1964. Alan Mann Racing was sent a preproduction chassis in February 1964 for testing and evaluation before homologation. The car was tested secretly at Goodwood and a detailed report was sent back to Dearborn. Ford had decided to enter the Mustang in some European endurance rallies, including the Tour de France and Marathon de la Route. AMR prepared and entered the cars, and won the Tour de France, providing the new Mustang with its first competition success worldwide. AMR also prepared a Mustang for Roy Pierpoint which won the 1965 British Saloon Car Championship, and the convertible for the Bond film Goldfinger.
Alan Mann was personally very fond of the Mustang, and on his return to racing in 2004, it was a Mustang he chose to relaunch the team. AMR still runs a Mustang in historic races today, which was built by Brian Lewis who worked on the Alan Mann Racing Mustangs in 1964.
